Here is a very fine 1961 profile of J.D. Salinger that ran in Time. Very interesting stuff.

Thank you for posting this. I find this sentence to capture the purest essence of Salinger’s genius:

‘The train pulls in: “Like so many people who, perhaps, ought to be issued only a very probational pass to meet trains, he tried to empty his face of all expression that might quite simply, perhaps even beautifully, reveal how he felt about the arriving person.” This is the sort of bull’s-eye at which Salinger is unmatched. It is felt by the flesh as much as by the mind; for an instant, the reader’s cheeks sag as he remembers, with ridiculous guilt, the last time he met a train.’

Bull’s-eye, indeed. Thanks again.
