The Old Grey Whistle Test

1 02 2010

Most memorably hosted by that weird-looking character above, “Whispering” Bob Harris, The Old Grey Whistle Test was a music program on BBC2 that ran from 1971 to 1987. Bob Harris’ interviews with everyone from Bruce Springsteen to John Lennon to Keith Richards are fascinating, in part because of the interviewees and in part because Bob Harris is a weird-looking guy with a funny voice and mannerisms. Many of the prominent musical acts of the age stopped by the show, and I selected some of my favorite highlights below:

John Lennon, “Stand By Me,” 1975

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, “Listen to Her Heart,” 1978

The Kinks, “You Really Got Me,” 1977

David Bowie, “Queen Bitch,” 1972

David Bowie, “Oh! You Pretty Things,” 1972

Keith Richards interview, 1974

John Lennon interview, 1975
